In many areas where the tech is available it is fashionable to print computer graphics onto the skin using alcohol-based dyes that are sweat-fast but that can be removed when desired. The graphics are generated by computer, and can be anything from subtle make-up like effects through traditional tattoo-like designs to photorealistic surreal and tomp l'oiel images. This sot of thing is most often used for evening and nightclub wear. Some societies encourage conventional formal use, others promote whimsy, originality, and self-expression when such images are used.
For those prepared to take on something a bit more permanent, there are computer-controlled tattooing machines that produce high-resolution tattoos with a wide colour gamut by firing tiny needles of pigment through the epidermis. This is much faster and less painful than needle tattooing (though the tattoos areas do itch for days) and allows spectacular images. Better and cheaper than traditional tattooing, it is in many places more common than tattooing is on the Earth of 2010.
